First and foremost, it’s worth extending our appreciations for filmmaker Suseendran for his ability to choose an unique script that has a different pattern. Having delivered a powerful crime-thriller like ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’ with a A-league star like Karthi, he has strode away leaving the traces and comes up with a newfangled village drama titled ‘Azhagar Saamiyin Kuthirai’. The film is produced by Madhan and is released by Cloud Nine Movies Dayanidhi Azhagiri. The film is based on the story written by Bhaskar Sakthi.
Set in backdrops of 1982, the story revolves around a village named Mallayapuram (located near Theni). The villagers follow a ritual of practicing a festival where the God’s statue placed on wooden horse would be taken as a procession so that the village gets plenty of rain. But things turn topsy-turvy for the villagers when the wooden horse goes missing, but they are surprised by the entry of a white horse. They start presuming that it’s a Godsend creature as it brings fortune to many people in the village. All of sudden, we see Azhagar Saamy (Appukutty) running down to the village claiming it to be his horse. Will he get back his horse that remains as his source of earning for his livelihood? You’ll have to watch the rest over the screens.
Before choosing to watch ‘Azhagar Saamiyin Kuthirai’ you’ll have to make sure of few things. This film has some similarities with usual patterns of rural backdrops. But it is only to a certain extent.
Most of the actors are familiar for their works in ‘Vennila Kabadi Kulu’ and ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’. Right from the era of Bharathiraja, we often notice a village lad and belle belonging to different castes in love with each other. Of course, it becomes the major backdrop for this film, but with a different touch. The protagonist has something more with the script while Appukutty entertains right from his introduction before intermission.
While the films based on human-pet affection are so familiar in western countries, it is not a cup of coffee for our filmmakers. Thanks to Suseendran for choosing a rare script. The sequences involving Appukutty and Horse are filmed well and how it influences the life of many characterizations is done trenchantly. Credit goes to the script writer. The mystery behind the wooden horse lost revealed during climax is heart-warming.
Technically, it’s maestro Ilayaraja stealing the show with his transfixing background score and songs. The song ‘Kudhikkira’ has been shot splendidly by newcomer Theni Eshwar.
Suseendran weaves a neat screenplay of just 130 minutes and ensures that it stands out as a decent family entertainer. While everything looks perfect with the film, we will have to wait and watch whether it can be able to commercially succeed as the box office charts are already occupied by big tickets like ‘Ko’, ‘Vaanam’ and ‘Engeyum Kadhal’.
